Relative Clause

Relative Clause:

A noun or Pronoun + Relative word + Relative Clause

A. Study the table and learn which relative words are used in what ways:

Who

Used for people (subject)

The teacher who teaches us Nepali is strict.

Whom

Used for people (object)

The boy whom I met yesterday is absent.

Whose

Used for possession (for people and properties)

The student whose bag is lost is crying.

Which

Used for things and animals,

Also refer the whole sentence

This is the book which I bought yesterday.

The dog which bit me was dangerous.

Sentence case:
He failed the exam, which surprised everyone.

That

Used for people and things. (when we use that for people we cannot use comma)

This is the movie that I like most.

The girl that won the prize is my cousin

Where

Place

This is the school where I studied.

When

Time

I remember the day when we met

Why

Reason

This is the reason why he left the job.

How

Method (non – standard relative pronoun )

Use – in which instead or that

I don’t know the manner how in which he speaks

 

 B. Tips

  • Sometimes same word works as noun (object) and place:
    – I sold the house where I got born. (place)
    – I sold the house that was in village. (object)

 

 C. Defining and non – defining relative clause:

# Defining Relative Clause (Essential)

  • Gives essential information
  • No comma is used
  • Without it, meaning is unclear

e.g.

– Students who work hard succeed.

– The man who stole the bike was arrested.

 

# Defining Relative Clause (Essential)

  • Gives additional information
  • Comma is used
  • That is not used

e.g.

– My father, who is a teacher, lives in Pokhara.

– Kathmandu, which is the capital of Nepal, is crowded.

  

Exercise A:

Fill in the blanks with suitable relative pronouns: who, which, that, whom, whose, where, why, how, what or when.
