Comparative

Compare the two variables in multiple ways (only two)

#STRUCTURE 1#

  • S+V ….Comparative (Adjectives) + than + S+V.
  • S+V ….(more) + Adverb (comparative form) + than + S+V. (it is better to use adverb with their comparatives if possible) i.e. friendly- more friendly/ friendlier

 

# Without Adjectives: With more/less

a. Pencil costs 10 rupees. Colour pencil costs 20 rupees. (using more)
Colour pencil costs more than pencil costs.
Colour pencil costs more than pencil does.

b. Pencil costs 10 rupees. Colour pencil costs 20 rupees. (using less)
Pencil costs less than colour pencil costs.
Pencil costs less than colour pencil does.

 

 # With Adjectives – (with Comparatives)

c. Kathmandu is 85 km. Pokhara is 210 km. (from Hetauda) (let’s use near)
Kathmandu is nearer than Pokhara (is)/ (from Hetauda).

 

# With Adjectives – (without Comparatives: add more before adjective)

d. Kathmandu is 85 km. Pokhara is 210 km. (from Hetauda) (let’s use far)
Pokhara is more far than Kathmandu (is)/ (from Hetauda).

 

# With Adverbs – (without Comparatives: add more before adverb better if comparative of adverb is possible)

e. Mahesh had 5 accidents whereas Rahul has 2. (safely)
Rahul drives more safely than Mahesh does.
Mahesh drives less safely than Rahul does.

f. Sangita danced well but Sara won the award. (beautifully)
Sara danced more beautifully than Sangita did.

 

#STRUCTURE 2#

  • S + V + as __adj/adv__+as + S + V.
  • S+ V (Negative) + as __adj/adv__+as + S + V.

 

g. Pencil costs 10 rupees. Colour pencil costs 20 rupees.
Pencil doesn’t cost as much as colour pencil.
Pencil doesn’t cost as expensive as colour pencil.

h. Kathmandu is 85 km. Pokhara is 210 km. (from Hetauda)
Kathmandu is not as far as Pokhara (is)/ (from Hetauda).
Pokhara is not as near as Kathmandu (is)/ (from Hetauda).

i. Sangita danced well but Sara won the award. (beautifully)
Sangita didn’t dance as beautifully as Sara did.
Sangita didn’t dance as beautifully to win the award as Sara did.

 

#NOTE
– sometimes other nouns or part of the adjectives will be followed. It means only single word Adj/Adv wouldn’t be there always.
