A. Yes/ No questions:

  1. Aux verb: Aux movement
    He is playing football. –
     Is he playing football?
  2. Main verb: (V1= do, V5= does, V2= did)
    V1/5 – Do/Does + S + V1 ….?
    He plays football. à Does he play football?
    They visit temple. à Do they visit temple?
    V2 – Did + S + V1 …?
    She cut grass. à Did she cut grass?
    #NOTE: use base form (V1) after using auxiliary (helping) verb.

B. Wh – Questions:

  • For making wh- questions we need to place the wh- words before yes/no questions after we remove the answer of Wh- words
    He plays football. (what)
    – yes/no – Does he play football? (Football is the answer)
    – Wh – What does he play? (answer is removed)
  • For ‘Who’ questions we can remove the subject (answer) only.
    He plays football. (who)
    – Who plays football?
  • Change ‘some’ into ‘any
  • Change ‘a little’ into ‘much
  • Change ‘a few’ into ‘many
 
  • Question word choice:
    Who – person
    Whom – person (object)
    What – thing
    Where – place
    When – time
    Why – reason
    Which – choice
    Whose – possession

C. Make wh- questions so that the words in bold become the answer.

  1. Romeo loves Juliet.
  2. My mother made a delicious bread
  3. The music was composed by Narayan Gopal. (passive)
  4. I’m looking for a new book.
  5. They were talking about the new movie.
  6. She got the idea from a story.
  7. She always goes to school on foot.
  8. She sometimes goes to the cinema.
  9. They have been waiting for three years.
  10. Maya baked the cake for the school fair.
  11. We met some of our old friends at the park yesterday.
  12. The painting was completed by Leonardo da Vinci. (passive)
  13. She borrowed the dress from her cousin.
  14. He bought a few apples from the market.
  15. We discussed the problem for a little while before deciding.
  16. The concert will be held in Sydney.
  17. My uncle gifted me a gold watch on my birthday.
  18. She writes poems in the evening.
  19. The homework was done by the students themselves. (passive)
  20. We had some juice after the football match.
  21. They started the meeting at 10 o’clock sharp.
  22. She visited the museum with her younger brother.
  23. The speech was delivered by the principal. (passive)
  24. He spends his free time playing chess.
  25. The children were playing in the garden.
  26. He returned the book to the librarian
  27. The laptop was repaired by a skilled technician. (passive)
  28. They received some good news last week.
  29. She painted the walls blue.

D. Rewrite the following questions as indirect questions as in the example. Begin with the words given.
Example:

  1. What time did you wake up this morning? Can you remember ….. …?
    – Can you remember what time you woke up that morning?
  2. How much do colour TVs cost these days? Have you any idea……?
  3. What time does the film start? I wonder….?
  4. Was he alone? Did you notice….?
  5. When are they getting married? I’m longing to know…..?
  6. Did I lock the front door? Do you remember….?
  7. Has the train left? Have you found out……?
  8. What colour curtains did they buy? Do you know……?

–        Yes/no question = if/whether

–        Wh – question   = same wh word

–        Question (v + s + o) à sentence (s + v + o)

Note## – don’t change the tense as of indirect speech

E. Change these indirect questions into direct ones. (Just reverse the rules that we applied in ‘QN D’. Make Yes/No or Wh question which is necessary)

    1. Could you tell me where the Market Street is?
    2. I am longing to know what time the bank opens.
    3. Do you have any idea how he’s managed to get in shape so quickly?
    4. I’d like to know how much this motorcycle costs these days.
    5. Did you notice if he had left the car in the park?
    6. Have you found out if the train has left?
    7. I was wondering if they speak English well.
    8. Would you tell us how we can get to the post office from here?
    9. Do you remember if I locked the front door?
    10. Can you tell me where the nearest pharmacy is?
    11. I’d like to know when the final exam will start.
    12. Do you happen to know whether she has finished her homework?
    13. Could you let me know how far it is to the airport?
    14. Have you heard if the concert tickets are still available?
    15. I am curious to know why the shop closed early yesterday.
    16. Would you mind telling me who is responsible for this project?
    17. Do you have any idea whether the bus runs after midnight?
    18. Could you explain how this new software works?
    19. I was wondering if it’s going to rain later today.

F. Change the following questions into informational questions. (make Wh – questions removing the information)

    1. Are we having tomato / chicken / mushroom soup today?
      – What flavour of soup are we having today ?
    2. Was it raining/ foggy / cold when you were in London?
    3. Are you planning to use your father’s car /Tony’s car/ my car?
    4. Are you going to boil/fry/ scramble those eggs?
    5. Is it 500miles/1000 miles/ along way to London from here?
    6. Would you like to do manual/office/outdoor work?
    7. Are there four/five/six of you?
    8. I hear he’s hurt his leg. Has he broken/ bruised/ cut it?
    9. Are you Margaret’s cousin/brother/nephew?
    10. Is the cinema opposite/next to/ round the corner from the station?
    11. Have you given away/sold/burnt my old football boots?
    12. Did you use half inch/one-inch/three-quarter-inch screws?
